Chronic-Severe Stress & Anxiety, taking Effexor xr 250mg & skelaxon for muscle tension & spasms *NOT WORKING*? I also have to take synthroid for a recently discovered underactive thyroid, and adipex (phentermine) to help w/ the weight that was gained b/c of it. I take ambien cr to sleep, I know this is a lot of meds but when I try to get off one of them my whole body goes out of whack and the stress gets even worse. It's so bad WITH all of the above that I cry for no reason and either don't want to do anything or when I do, I get stress migraines. Any Suggestions??

AlthaeaRose replied: "In my opinion you need to do some serious soul searching and figure out what is the root of all this. These meds are only making it worse and destroying your body. Your mind is much more powerful than all of these meds. You figure out what is at the root of all this and start from there. You might need counseling and you may be able to start with getting off of one med at a time. If you have a good doctor he/she will help you not tell you to stay on all the meds."

foshizzle replied: "i'd talk to your doctor about weaning off of the Effexor - it is *highly* likely that it is causing the majority of the side effects....take a look at the side effects on rxlist.com - there's so many (as compared to most other antidepressants), it's ridiculous...also, although it can be very effective for depression, Effexor isn't all that successful in treating people who have anxiety disorders....read what patients have to say about it who have anxiety on askapatient.com"

enchanted mermaid replied: "you are covering up what is really wrong I take thryoid and effexor for cataplexy so i know the feeling..but something is really bothering you...maybe left over from childhood?? You are worth the trouble to get at the root of the problem do you feel that your life is not your own??? write down your dreams and study them..they tell us what we are hiding from ourselves..blessings"

BARBY-JEAN P replied: "Hi ,walks help and for the migraines coffee or pepsi and alot of water .maybe one of your Meds are not right for you ,always talk with Dr's because some Meds don't mix with others, the biggest thing don;t ever mix with alchol."

Elizabeth replied: "I took Effexor for several years, it did wonders with depression but made my anxiety much, much worse. It can be difficult to go off Effexor as well (it took me almost a year of slowly dropping the dose), so you really need to see a good specialist that can help you change medications. You may be able to switch the muscle tension med for alternative care, like chiropractic and therapeutic massage. I have similar problems to you, but treat as much as possible without meds. I also do pilates, which strengthens your core muscles, taking strain and tension away from the larger muscles. It helps a lot with pain and spasms. Your main issues seem to be thyroid and anxiety, those are the ones that probably can't be handled without medication. Exercise and diet will take care of the weight issues (I've lost a ton of weight I gained under similar circumstances, without extra meds) and also help with sleep. Ambien only works for awhile, then insomnia returns. See a doctor. Find an alternative anxiety medication, because Effexor isn't doing it for you. Ask for non-med alternatives for tension/spasms, and ask to see a nutritionist to be put on a diet and exercise program. Less medications, but a better long term solution."

Has anyone had good experinces with Effexor XR? I'm not talking about coming off of it. Any suggestions for a good SSRI for chronic anxiety. I've taken Lexapro and Zoloft

vaughn favrua replied: "hell no. but all meds react differently to everyone so hope it works"

adobeprincess replied: "I have taken paxil and had really bad withdrawl when I stopped taking it. The drug companies call it "discontinuation syndrome". Effexor and Cymbalta also have this syndrome. After my experience with paxil I would never try those antidepressants. I have anxiety and bipolar disorder. I take lexapro, wellbutrin, abilify and lamictal."

Janet T replied: "I was on Effexor for a couple of years and didn't like it. I felt like I was stoned all the time. I gradually came off the Effexor and instead I started taking Omega 3 for healthy brain vitamins. This has worked for 2 years now. I recommend it to any one. At least it is not a drug. It is all natural fish oils."
